Love After Lockup is the reality TV equivalent of a car crash you can't look away from, messy, manipulative, and weirdly addictive. The premise is brutally simple: film couples as one partner gets released from prison and they try to build a life together. It's not quite documentary and not quite scripted, landing somewhere in the ethically murky swamp that VH1 and WE tv have perfected. What makes it work is the casting. Producers clearly look for people with zero impulse control, massive trust issues, and a complete inability to read a room. You'll scream at the screen, but you'll keep watching. The UK broadcast seems to be the US version with British time slots shuffled in. The pacing is slow, lots of filler, long pauses, and repetitive confessionals, but the payoff moments (fights, betrayals, surprise pregnancies) hit hard. If you want highbrow television, look elsewhere. If you want to feel better about your own relationship choices, Love After Lockup live is a masterclass in schadenfreude. Stream it on Tvivu.
