Legislative TV is the purest form of reality television, and I mean that without a hint of irony. There’s no editing, no voiceover, no producer deciding what’s dramatic, just uninterrupted democracy in its rawest, most boring, and occasionally riveting form. C-SPAN in the United States practically invented the format back in 1979, gavel-to-gavel coverage of the House and Senate with no commentary, no spin. That model spread globally: the Dutch Parliament streams every committee hearing, the Spanish Congress broadcasts plenary sessions on Canal Congreso, and Brazil’s TV Câmara covers the Chamber of Deputies in high definition. What separates a good legislative channel from a filler one is commitment to the gavel-to-gavel ethos. The best ones don’t cut away for studio chat or panel discussions, they let you watch the actual legislative sausage being made. You get the mundane motions, the procedural votes, the occasional outburst that makes news headlines. These channels also archive debates, which is a goldmine for anyone tracking how a law was built word by word. If you’ve ever wondered what your MP or congressperson actually does all day, pull up a live feed from the Oireachtas (Ireland) or a Dutch lower house stream. It’s slow, it’s procedural, and it matters more than any pundit roundtable.
